There was a point where I genuinely thought I had a bit of a⌠problem.
Not a dramatic one. Nothing worth announcing out loud.
Just a quiet, end-of-the-day habit that started to feel a little too familiar.
The kettle would go on.
The kitchen would go quiet.
And without really thinking about it, my hand would reach for the hobnobs.
One turned into two.
Two into⌠well, you know how it goes.
And the strange part was, I wasnât even hungry.
Iâd pause halfway through and think,
âWhy am I doing this?â
But Iâd still reach for another.
If this feels familiar, youâre not alone. Iâve created a free nervous system healing guide to help you feel safer and more grounded.

⸝
đż It didnât make sense⌠until it did
For a long time, I thought it was just a lack of discipline.
That I needed to be âbetter.â
More controlled.
Less⌠whatever this was.
But healing has a way of quietly changing how you see things.
Because one evening, I noticed something different.
It had been a long day.
Not just physically, emotionally.
The kind of day where youâve held everything together, kept going, stayed strongâŚ
but underneath, your system is just tired.
And there I was again.
Kettle on. Hobnobs out.
Only this time, I didnât judge it.
I just sat with it.
And the thought came in, gently:
âThis isnât about the biscuits.â
⸝
đż What my body was really asking for
When youâve been in survival mode for a long time, your body doesnât just switch off when the day ends.
It doesnât suddenly feel safe because the house is quiet.
Thereâs still that hum underneath it all.
That low-level tension.
That quiet exhaustion that no one else sees.
And your body looks for relief.
Not in big, obvious ways.
But in small, accessible comforts:
⢠something warm
⢠something sweet
⢠something predictable
Something that says:
âHere⌠this will help, just for a moment.â
And thatâs what the hobnobs were.
Not a lack of willpower.
Not a bad habit.
Just my nervous system⌠trying to soften.
⸝
đż The shift wasnât what I expected
I didnât suddenly cut them out.
I didnât replace them with something âhealthier.â
I didnât force myself to stop.
Because that never works when your body is asking for something deeper.
Instead, I started asking a different question:
âWhat do I actually need right now?â
Sometimes, the answer was still:
đ a cup of tea and a couple of hobnobs
But other times, it was:
⢠sitting in silence for a few minutes
⢠wrapping up in a blanket
⢠putting something gentle on in the background
⢠letting myself come down slowly instead of pushing through
And without forcing itâŚ
The cravings softened.
⸝
đż It was never about control
I think so many of us carry this quiet frustration with ourselves.
We think:
⢠âWhy canât I just stop?â
⢠âWhatâs wrong with me?â
But the truth isâŚ
Your body isnât working against you.
Itâs working for you.
Even in the ways that donât make sense at first.
Even in the habits you quietly judge.
⸝
đż So if this feels familiarâŚ
If youâve ever found yourself reaching for something,
not out of hunger, but something else you canât quite nameâŚ
Youâre not lacking discipline.
Youâre not failing.
You might just be:
tired, overwhelmed, and trying to soothe yourself in the only way your body knows how right now
⸝
đż A gentle reminder
You donât need to strip everything back and âfixâ yourself overnight.
Sometimes the shift begins with something much softer:
understanding, instead of judging
And if that understanding happens to come
with a cup of tea and a hobnob (or two!) in handâŚ
Youâre still moving forward đż
If youâve been feeling constantly on edge or stuck in survival mode, Iâve put together a gentle free guide to help your nervous system slow down and feel safe again.
