There’s a moment that many people don’t talk about after leaving a toxic or emotionally abusive relationship.
It’s not the leaving.
It’s what comes after.
When you realise they’ve moved on…
and suddenly, there’s someone new standing exactly where you once stood.
⸻
If this is how you’ve been feeling lately: overwhelmed, on edge, or like your body just won’t calm down, you’re not alone in this.
I created a gentle, free nervous system healing guide to help you understand what’s happening in your body and give you simple ways to start feeling a little safer and more grounded again.
🌿 You can access it here:

⸻
The instinct to protect
Your first thought isn’t always anger.
Sometimes, it’s concern.
You see it clearly now.
The patterns.
The behaviour.
The subtle ways things start to shift.
And a part of you wonders:
“Should I warn them?”
“Should I tell them what they’re really like?”
Because you remember how confusing it felt at the beginning.
And you don’t want someone else to walk into that blindly.
If you’re starting to recognise patterns you couldn’t see before, this might help you understand why → read They Didn’t Hurt Me the Same Way
⸻
I thought about warning her
There were moments where I considered it.
More than once.
I would think:
“Should I say something?”
“Should I warn her before it gets worse?”
Because I knew exactly how it starts.
And I knew how disorienting it becomes once you’re inside it.
⸻
But I didn’t… for a few reasons
Some of them were protective.
Some of them were honest.
And yes, some of them were a little selfish too.
⸻
The first was this.
I knew he would have already prepared her.
People like that don’t leave things to chance.
They plant seeds early.
They shape the narrative.
They make sure that if anything is ever said about them, it sounds unbelievable.
And deep down, I knew that if I stepped in, it wouldn’t create distance between them.
It would bring them closer.
⸻
The second reason was fear.
Not loud, obvious fear.
The kind you learn over time.
The kind that comes from knowing how someone responds to not getting their way.
My ex didn’t deal with non-compliance openly.
He punished it quietly.
Subtly.
In ways that were hard to prove, but very real to live through.
And I knew that saying something could trigger that again.
It simply wasn’t worth the stress.
⸻
And then there was the honest thought I didn’t say out loud
At one point, I remember thinking:
“He is her problem now.”
Not in a cruel way.
Not in a way that wished harm on anyone.
But in a way that recognised something important.
I had already carried enough. He is no longer mine to carry.
⸻
The quiet truth
Even if you do warn them…
they probably won’t hear you.
Not really.
Because at the beginning, it doesn’t look like abuse.
It looks like attention.
Connection.
Possibility.
And when someone is in that stage, they aren’t looking for warnings.
They’re holding onto hope.
⸻
The part that changes everything
Trying to warn the next person doesn’t just keep you connected to them.
It keeps you emotionally tied to your past.
You’re still watching.
Still thinking about it.
Still carrying a sense of responsibility that was never yours to hold.
And that slows your healing more than you realise.
⸻
Letting go isn’t approval
Choosing not to warn them doesn’t mean you agree with what happened.
It doesn’t mean you think it’s okay.
It doesn’t mean you don’t care.
It means you are choosing yourself instead.
⸻
Where your energy actually belongs
Not in trying to save someone else.
Not in replaying what happened.
Not in staying connected to their life.
But in rebuilding your own.
⸻
The shift from them to you
The moment you stop looking outward and start looking inward, something begins to change.
Your thoughts feel quieter.
Your body starts to settle.
Your energy slowly comes back to you.
Not all at once.
But enough to notice.
⸻
This is where real healing begins
Not when they change.
Not when they get what they deserve.
But when you gently step out of that cycle and say:
“I’m done carrying this.”
⸻
A gentle place to begin
If you’re trying to move your energy back towards your own healing, I’ve created something to support you.
The Nervous System Reset Bundle is designed for moments exactly like this. When your mind keeps pulling you back into the past, and your body still feels unsettled.
It’s not about rushing your healing.
It’s about helping you feel safe enough to move forward, slowly and gently.
👉

⸻
You don’t have to carry it anymore
You don’t need to fix their life.
You don’t need to warn the next person.
And you don’t need to stay connected to something that hurt you.
You’re allowed to walk away… fully.
And begin again, in your own time.
🌿 If you’re in that messy in-between stage of healing, this might feel familiar → read – Healing Isn’t Pretty. its clumsy, messy, and still worth it.
🌿 If this brought clarity to something you couldn’t quite name before, this might help you go deeper → What Is Wrong With Me?
You don’t have to carry everything you’ve learned into the next chapter.
You’re allowed to leave it behind… and choose something softer for yourself.
With warmth – Lisa
